Talk Talk With Carl and Kacey – Norway Cruise

Talk Talk With Carl and Kacey – Norway Cruise

Varder Church

The architecture of Varder’s main church was inspired by fish drying racks. Fish drying racks are A-Frames with cross members. Fresh fish are draped over the cross members to preserve fish for winter meals. Behind the church is a radio listening post aimed toward Russia. In the picture below see the lights. These dome shapes are listening posts.

Geo Marker

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 kilometers (1,750 mi), which yielded the first accurate measurement of a meridian arc The goal was to calculate the circumference of the earth. The calculations made in the 1830’s was quite close to the actual distance.

WWII Museum

In Port Svolvaer, Lofoten Islands is a WWII museum, a bit quirky, yet addresses a serious subject. Memoriabilia has come from many sources. An important acquisition is an Secret Radio Transmitter, and a German Enigma Machine.
